Weirdest DMOD Contest (Dunno if it's been done before)
You could use the Ludum Dare Theme Generator to try to find something. They're not all going to work but you can probably find a few that would work quite well.
Why not look to fleshing out some part of the Dink Story? Perhaps we should know what happens to Milder or why Dink's house caught fire or what happened to his dad.
I know I was thinking of making my next (after "All that Glitters") dmod about Dink's quest to find out more about his dad. I have even started a few notes on the storyline for it.
Alas... generating a dmod takes me too much time to allow me compete on a short deadline, so I'm not likely to participate in the contest no matter what the theme is, except perhaps as a judge and/or game player.
But I'm excited about any reason for us to have new dmods to play!

I have no idea what the theme could be.
@SlipDink
It might intest you that some D-Mods like Historical Hero explored the concept of Dink's father. Also, Kerrek is actually working on a D-Mod just about that.

Idea 1:
One screen dmod. And before you mention this, I mean a dmod with an actual story.
Idea 2:
Use the original mapping and create your own different original Dink game. You can add stuff, but mustn't delete anything, or anyone. People can have different names though, and Dink doesn't have to start in Stonebrook. He can be a delivery boy for Herb Boot Guy, or Martridge's apprentice, or Dead Dragon Carcass's sect head of logistics for human trafficking and allocation of sacrificial equipment. But, all of that, on the same old, reliable, familiar, map...

i actually started a dmod with the vanilla map, but i changed all the tiles and graphics to reflect it as a destroyed hellscape.
too bad i suck too much to finish anything.

"too bad i suck too much to finish anything"
I can relate to this statement. I will definitely get nothing done this year. I know that for sure.
On the D-Mod idea:
"The Conspiracy"
Backstory leading into the dmod:
After the goblin war ended, people feared that other evils would eventually rise up and cause havoc in the world. Although the king had won the war and would try to calm his people, it was obvious people were still uneasy and did not have as much confidence in Goodhearts army as he would like. This changed when a wizard, by the name of Martridge came with a prediction of the future. Being well versed in the art of magic, he could not only see forward in time, but he could see how things would unfold if certain events were to take place differently. It was prophesised by Martridge that one of the kings knights, Sir Smallwood(referring to Dinks father at the time), his child would become a protector of the lands, at the cost of his mother's life. The King, desperate to regain the confidence of his people, tasked Martridge with assuring this prophecy plays out as seen - the King tasked Martridge with assuring the death of Dinks mother. Word of this plan made its way to Sir Smallwood(Again referring to dinks father) and he tried to retaliate, which is why he was exiled from Goodheart and coincedently "never seen again"
Idea of actual dmod:
Martridge was the one who burned down dinks house, killing his mother, and putting him on the path to become a hero as seen in his vision. Somehow, Dink hears of this conspiracy and the dmods story is based around Dink confirming the hearsay with evidence, thus turning him into a person hell bent on revenge. It can go anywhere from this point (eg, he could track down some goblins, and help them declare a war on Goodheart, fighting alongside them, thus creating the second goblin war, which seems like the perfect revenge), but whatever the case, the ultimate idea is, dink wants to destroy Goodheart because he realises he's been working under the people who were responsible for the death of both his parents.

Basically, I got carried away with a D-Mod idea I've had for a while, but I think any form of contest that builds on the original game, and HAS to use vanilla map as a requirement (sprites can change, but basic map layout/detail must stay the same), would be cool. BTW I'm not making the dmod idea I described above. Like I said, I don't think I'll get anything done this year.
Make a D-Mod without using any of the original art assets
Okay, now I have some ideas:
Creepy D-Mod - basically DMODs with thriller and horror themes.
Funny D-Mod - just try making the DMOD the funniest possible.
Treasure Hunt - Dink has to find a hidden treasure
Story of an NPC - the contestants has to choose a random NPC from the main game and make a story about them.
Yeah I know, kind of poor themes, but if I come up with something better I'll expand the list.

@ Robj:
Too bad (you are not making the dmod idea you described above). It sounds like a very interesting tale to tell.
@ everyone else:
Hey, let's see if we can either:
a) get Robj to release "The Dark Avilan" as an unfinished work, so maybe another can pick it up and finish it and we can at least get an idea of what his magnum opus would have been like. Maybe we should hold a dmod contest that consists of way's to finish "The Dark Avilan".
b) get Robj to finish "The Dark Avilan" and release it soon.

stop posting ideas. i've already won.

Keep asking for Dark Avilan and it's release will be pushed back another year.
How 'bout a Villain contest? Make a Dmod where you're the bad guy. Simple concept.

That is a pretty cool Dmod idea RobJ, I must say. The most important part being that Dink wants revenge on Martridge; could make for a cool story. The Dmod I'm making and will be released "eventually" does explore some similar themes as your idea but there's a bit more to it at the same time. I have worked on it a bit recently, just have to keep convincing myself to get some done here and there and not be perfectionist about it and eventually it will be done.
Damn! Just 17 replies so far (and not every on the subject directly). We are lazy to come up with an idea, let alone materialize it.
they're lazy because they know i won.
I came up with an idea! Hell, I was the second to mention any ideas.
no you didn't. no one but me did because i won.
now get on it. i'll be the one and only judge, so if you displease me, you lose.

(My italicized comments below are from the "Dinak main game" thread, where evals began the thread with the text: "Hi; Can the game be remade without loseing the mother. I dont like her dying; can some one alter and give the game like dink saves his mother from fire". Bluedy suggested that I "...post this [my italicized comments below] in the contest thread" so we can "see how everyone feels about it based on the number of votes it gets.".)
Perhaps we should solicit more plot changes to the original game (from any interested in doing so) and use these idea as a basis for the contest that redink1 is asking about.
The requirements would be to use the original map, and characters, but meet any and all plot changes that we all agree to. Of course the story could change and new characters could be added, or existing characters could change.
What do you all think about this?

I don't think contest themes should be too specific.
Based on some of stuff being said lately... why not an alternate reality mod?
Like what would happen if Dink never left home and kept being a pig farmer? What if Milder had succeeded and been the big damn hero and continued to get the glory instead? What if the Cast were the good guys trying to liberate the Kingdom from the tyrannical King Daniel?

@Striker
...while Dink's envy leads him to more and more horrible moral decidions, making him the ultimate villain. That would be interesting...

That would be unfortunate because I have already released my entry.
Another perspective: tell the story of another person from the dink smallwood main game
Familiar but unfamiliar: a dmod about Dink Smallwood but with very different gameplay
Adventure of a pillbug: a dmod in which you controll a pillbug
Dialog matters: a dmod were dialog is the central part of the gameplay, you can’t just skip it through to get to the action

Funny you say that iplaydink, I actually did start to make a D-mod about the player being a pillbug, as an entry to the "Silent Protagonist" contest back in 2014. I didn't get very far with it though, just an introduction. Although now that I think back on it, pillbugs aren't actually silent, so it probably wouldn't have done very well.
There's also that talking pillbug on Mr.Smilestein's farm.
I vote for the alternate reality idea.
vote for mine instead. oh, wait. that would be pointless since i already won.
Something to do with April 1st?
Storyline based on some trick or a big plot twist, it's a vague idea I know

Thoughts on an "alternate reality" version of the original game:
While it might be entertaining to play a few of this type of game, I am not in favor of it being the basis of the contest.
It's (probably) true that this type of dmod would be easy to produce and therefore we might expect more contest entries than usual. That would certainly be one reason to consider it as a contest theme.
On the other hand, we would also have a number of dmods that might be too much like each other to be interesting. For me, a major part of the joy of playing a new dmod is discovering what form of new lands and magic, and such Dink (and the player) get to explore together. Also, the main part of my joy in playing a new dmod is the enjoyment I get from hearing a new story that involves our somewhat incompetent and silly hero. Do you think this simple idea of retelling the original story will produce more interesting tales? I'm skeptical of that being a real outcome. Can't we be a bit more creative?

I like Sparrowhawk's idea about an unexpected twist in the plot.
Plot twists doesn't sound like a bad theme. I've got an absolutely terrible idea for one if it gets through (and I find the time to make it).
Actually, a well planned plot twist could be very interesting.
I'm leaning towards this theme!

An arcade game recreation similar to Dinkanoid or Dong or Dink Mines etc.
A d-mod contest about a contest? Loads of scope with that. Pie-eating, one one one combat, a race across the world...
maybe a 1 mistake contest where everything goes well till that 1 mistake ruins every bit you worked so hard for
@ redink1:
The March 23rd deadline is dead. What news have you, oh great and benevolent ruler of all things Dink Network?
What have you decided? We are perilously close to April 1st. Was this just an April Fools Day joke on us all?

From Redink's post: "I will select the winner, to be announced on April 1st."
It's not April 1st yet.

A D-Mod where you don't submit your idea before the deadline.
@Thenewguy:
Maybe he will just tell us "April Fools" today!

A d-mod where your only weapon is emotion.
Once the sky split and the world descended into chaos and ruin, he was all we had left. Our only hope. Our saviour.
Jamie. And his feelings.
